Reading Comprehension II

The Night When The English Parliament Almost Exploded

Guy Fawkes, was a English catholic who, with twelve friends more, made a plot to blow up the houses of Parliament, killing therefore King James I, his family and most of the Protestant aristocracy. To proceed with this plan the thirteen conspirators rented a room in the cellar of Parliament, in which they progressively stored thirty-six barrels of gunpowder. So they waited for the King to officially open the doors of parliament in early October, 1605, to blow up the barrels at such time as the King would sit on his Royal Throne. But a plague of epidemic forced to postpone the ceremony until November the fifth.
Ten days before the ceremony, William Parker, a noble catholic, baron of Monteagle and brother-in-law of Francis Tresham, one of the conspirators; received an anonymous letter that warned the danger of going to the ceremony. The four of November, Robert Cecil, Earl of Salisbury, who had a group of spies and knew of the plot months ago, ordered the chief of security, to record the parliament building. There they found Guy Fawkes reviewing preparations for the explosion. Historians say that Fawkes did not reveal the names of his accomplices.
Guy Fawkes and some conspirators were executed in act. Every year since that five of November the guard of Parliament has continued registering the building as a preamble to the ceremony of opening by the monarch.
